The Traitors, Peacock’s competition reality show, was a success in its first season.
The show features players divided into two groups: the faithful and the traitors. The traitors secretly eliminate (murder) faithful players from the game, while the faithful vote and ban those they suspect are traitors. If all the traitors are eliminated by the faithful, the prize is divided among them, but if any traitor survives until the end of the game, the entire prize is taken by the traitors.
Season 1 ended with Survivor legend Cirie Fields emerging as the sole winner. She beat both the faithful and her fellow traitors, showing the complexity of this social strategy challenge – the format is similar to the party game Mafia – where social adaptability is key to success.
However, the current format of the game greatly favors the traitors. The physical part of the game allows participants to add money to the prize. In season 1, everyone was encouraged to succeed in missions and were arbitrarily divided into teams that had little impact on the overall success of the mission. If the missions were structured to also use the social component, they could be much more important to the game.
In season 2, it would be smart to play with these missions and give some chance to the faithful against the traitors; perhaps using a mechanism similar to programs like The Mole or Snake in the Grass (Peacock competitions), where clues about the identities of saboteurs were provided to players who completed tasks.
This change would encourage traitors to work against the faithful in missions, which would make them more important to the game. Producers should also consider eliminating the twist that allows traitors to invite a faithful to join them after an original traitor is banned. This twist is unfair to the faithful and gives a great advantage to the traitors. The program should not risk ending early due to the too early elimination of the traitors, since the game is stacked against the faithful.
We hope that the second season of The Traitors changes some of these elements and presents a more engaging and balanced game.
